From Chitral to Islamabad

A Bird Eye View of Hindukush Ranges from Plane.

Tuesday January 17, 2012

Today in the morning I went to office and then straight to airport to get the flight to Islamabad. The weather was good and the plane had earlier arrived from Islamabad and came from Peshawar this time to pick me up. Fortunately the usually out of order ATM at Habib Bank was working and I got money so that I could a ticket. At the airport I waited for it taking to an elderly but well-read man who had his masters done in 1962. Not many passengers were there and it seems PIA is quite in loss by the opreation of this flight. A main reason is the increase in Fares of the flight which has made the air travel not in reach of ordinary people in Chitral. A good strategy could to reduce price to attract the passenger going down country by road in this harsh weather.

The plane was as usual with very few passengers and took along an elderly mother who was going down country for perhaps her checkups. I really enjoy the flight as I was sitting west ward this time and it was all clear wither with some captivating scenery down below. I saw valleys down below covered with snow and some with most beautiful landscape. I took a lot of pics and enjoyed the journey on the strectched out Hindukush ranges which go all the way to Afghanistan and beyond. Most of the times there was signals of Roshan Telecom of Afghanistan and other networks on my signal showing that we were close to Afghanistan. Another wonderful scenery on the occasion was the view of Tarbela Dam which was a like a giant ocean in the land. Landed at Chaklala by 11:45 and after handing over the elderly women to his son I went straight in a taxi to Wali uncle in AMC. There I had chat with the family and in the evening went to the police station with Wali uncle in connection with a mobile theft which was also a exciting experience to see our police system. Then in the eveing went to my altime favorite pindi sadder and wondered there till late and came back.

Coming to Pindi has always being an energizer for me as I love this city and its various localities. The people of Pindi are mostly very much self interested and business minded. The would even sometimes not give a newspaper for having a glance and will advice you to getting one for yourself. However it does not mean that it is every one like this rather there are lot of good people too and whom you will come across while you are there. A major factor in the bulging population of Pindi City is the increasing pressure on it becuase of islamabad being right next to it. This causes most of those doing job to take shelter in Pindi.

Anyways the saddar area of Pindi is a great place to shop at and you can find a range of deals going on there.

Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus

The much awaited Metro Bus Service is now functional in Islamabad connecting it to the twin city of Rawalpindi. The PKR 45 billion cost (USD 4440 million) of the project was criticized mainly by the opposition parties led by Tehreek Insaaf. However the record time for completion of the project is something which justifies the the financial outlay. In Pakistan Public Sector infrastructure projects are plagued by delays and some are altogether abandoned after partial work. The 23 KM long metro has 24 station. Today I had a glimpse of Pakistan Secretariat Station of it. There is quite excitement among the travelers and many are travelling just to have fun. Few pics here. Although secretariat is closed today being Saturday, still large number of public was seen buying tickets and Metro-Bus Card.  To avoid queuing up the line to buy ticket, a better option is to get a Metro-Bus Card. The card can be reloaded and costs 130 Rs for the first time and subsequently rec...

PHD in Economics

Not many universities offer PHD program in Economics in Pakistan. And of those offered only a few can be said to produce quality PHDs. So the other choice remains is to go for study in Abroad. But it not comes at free. There are requirement of GRE and Toefl which are a hard to do job for a Pakistani student. Here are few advice for the aspiring Economists. A lot has been said & done already. Study for your GREs because they're very important -- get multiple computer practice exams. Take courses & obtain research experience that you think will prepare you well for grad school. This might include graduate economics classes, or finding some offbeat & compelling research topic for an undergrad paper. Or maybe just trying to fill some deficiencies in your mathematics training (like, e.g., if you haven't taken multivariable calc & linear algebra). I think the econ courses are better preparation than are the more sophisticated math courses, but probability & math ...

From Pindi to Chitral

Date: 24 January, 2012 The day was a rest day. I saw off Arsalan at his school and then came back to home. I heard that flight had gone to Chitral today after a couple days of interval. I should have gone today as I had no official business left but some private matters were there to be do away with before I go to Chitral as there seemed no immediate retour of twin cities. I went to saddar and took out the last remaining 4K rupees from my account and proceeded to Raja Bazar which is the commercial hub of Rawalpindi and the main wholesale market of Rawalpindi. I strolled through the market asking for anything helpful to counter the extreme cold weather of Chitral. At last after many efforts  I ended with a gas heater which was converted to LPG by the shopkeeper for some additional amount. I took it and a lot many other thing from the the market where the prices were more attractive than Gilgit. With a heavy shopper and an empty pocket I went to saddar. From there I got some mino...
