Getting admission in Allama Iqbal Open University Islamabad

Today is the most memorable day of my life, as I finally passed my PGD from AIOU Isalmabad. This of out of sheer diligence, perseverance, frustation and not loosing heart to sit in countless exam and yes of course also with a stamina comparing bull who is yoked all the month long during ploughing season back in my village. The story starts half a decade ago, I applied for admission in this "prestigious" seat of learning in the early 2009.
On a fateful day in the summer of July 2009, what I started was a diploma in Youth Development Work from the Allama Iqbal Open University Islamabad. The university infamous for churning out degrees however came to be a nightmare for me. What supposed to be a one and half year Post Graduate Diploma took a whole fours years and two months to complete. This does not includes the lag between the application for admission and the actual start of classes. I would have perhaps successfully completed a PhD degree had I invested so much amount of time of mine. It was frustrating and notoriously delayed kind of affair after which I am able to pass this marathon diploma. There were reasons out of comprehension which if you are interested are given as follow:

  1. Once our tutor went for Umrah and fell ill there. He was unable to check our assignments and consequently we all were declared as fail. We had to read the course altogether from scratch with a huge penalty of time.
  2. Another time I sent all the assignments, took the final paper but strangely I was declared as "absent" from exam. Later I was told verbally by the Chairperson of the department that I am passed but due to clerical error has been declared as fail. I ran pillar to post but no avail. The debris of files was so huge that my results were lost in it altogether. Although I never wanted it, but I got the privilege Thus I had the forced privilege of passing the same paper twice to be able get my coveted diploma.
  3. At one instance, the tutor angrily called me and even threatened me to be persecuted under the anti-Blasphemy Law. The reason I mis spelled his holy name. Actually this particular assignment was done for me by a kind friend and want also sent by her on my behalf. She had written the abbreviated form of the tutor's otherwise long name which irked the septuagenarian retired bureaucrat whose furious call to me was enough to frighten to the extent that I got holiday from office to get to normal.
Many other instances are associated with this wornderful alma mater of mine. I anyone of is going for any degree in this otherwise grand seat of learning must make sure that he has twice the life expectancy as compared to an ordinary man. Those in a hurry to get a higher education degree must keep in mind that they will end up seriously contemplating suicide.

Best luck.

Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus

The much awaited Metro Bus Service is now functional in Islamabad connecting it to the twin city of Rawalpindi. The PKR 45 billion cost (USD 4440 million) of the project was criticized mainly by the opposition parties led by Tehreek Insaaf. However the record time for completion of the project is something which justifies the the financial outlay. In Pakistan Public Sector infrastructure projects are plagued by delays and some are altogether abandoned after partial work. The 23 KM long metro has 24 station. Today I had a glimpse of Pakistan Secretariat Station of it. There is quite excitement among the travelers and many are travelling just to have fun. Few pics here. Although secretariat is closed today being Saturday, still large number of public was seen buying tickets and Metro-Bus Card.  To avoid queuing up the line to buy ticket, a better option is to get a Metro-Bus Card. The card can be reloaded and costs 130 Rs for the first time and subsequently rec...

PHD in Economics

Not many universities offer PHD program in Economics in Pakistan. And of those offered only a few can be said to produce quality PHDs. So the other choice remains is to go for study in Abroad. But it not comes at free. There are requirement of GRE and Toefl which are a hard to do job for a Pakistani student. Here are few advice for the aspiring Economists. A lot has been said & done already. Study for your GREs because they're very important -- get multiple computer practice exams. Take courses & obtain research experience that you think will prepare you well for grad school. This might include graduate economics classes, or finding some offbeat & compelling research topic for an undergrad paper. Or maybe just trying to fill some deficiencies in your mathematics training (like, e.g., if you haven't taken multivariable calc & linear algebra). I think the econ courses are better preparation than are the more sophisticated math courses, but probability & math ...

Telenor easypaisa Gimmicks

Of late this mobile banking service has become a source of nuisance. Instead of providing quality service to its customers, It is trying to dupe them in one way or the other to mint money from them on as bizarre scheme as MOBILE INSURANCE through which they purport to pay 1000 PKR as medical bill in case of medical emergency. The customers are nowadays continuously getting spam calls from Easy Paisa for so called Medical Insurance. I have time and again their representatives categorically that I am not doing it as I have already had it for one year. I was duped by one of their of your representative to go for it saying that it is totally free but later on i found they have deducted around 1000 PKR from my account. I am seriously thinking of changing Easypaisa as my mobile account and as well as Telenor as my network. God forbid, if anything happens, they are not going to pay a single penny on one pretext or the other, while they call this a medical insurance, there is no proof of it...
