Today is the most memorable day of my life, as I finally passed my PGD from AIOU Isalmabad. This of out of sheer diligence, perseverance, frustation and not loosing heart to sit in countless exam and yes of course also with a stamina comparing bull who is yoked all the month long during ploughing season back in my village. The story starts half a decade ago, I applied for admission in this "prestigious" seat of learning in the early 2009.
On a fateful day in the summer of July 2009, what I started was a diploma in Youth Development Work from the Allama Iqbal Open University Islamabad. The university infamous for churning out degrees however came to be a nightmare for me. What supposed to be a one and half year Post Graduate Diploma took a whole fours years and two months to complete. This does not includes the lag between the application for admission and the actual start of classes. I would have perhaps successfully completed a PhD degree had I invested so much amount of time of mine. It was frustrating and notoriously delayed kind of affair after which I am able to pass this marathon diploma. There were reasons out of comprehension which if you are interested are given as follow:
- Once our tutor went for Umrah and fell ill there. He was unable to check our assignments and consequently we all were declared as fail. We had to read the course altogether from scratch with a huge penalty of time.
- Another time I sent all the assignments, took the final paper but strangely I was declared as "absent" from exam. Later I was told verbally by the Chairperson of the department that I am passed but due to clerical error has been declared as fail. I ran pillar to post but no avail. The debris of files was so huge that my results were lost in it altogether. Although I never wanted it, but I got the privilege Thus I had the forced privilege of passing the same paper twice to be able get my coveted diploma.
- At one instance, the tutor angrily called me and even threatened me to be persecuted under the anti-Blasphemy Law. The reason I mis spelled his holy name. Actually this particular assignment was done for me by a kind friend and want also sent by her on my behalf. She had written the abbreviated form of the tutor's otherwise long name which irked the septuagenarian retired bureaucrat whose furious call to me was enough to frighten to the extent that I got holiday from office to get to normal.
Many other instances are associated with this wornderful alma mater of mine. I anyone of is going for any degree in this otherwise grand seat of learning must make sure that he has twice the life expectancy as compared to an ordinary man. Those in a hurry to get a higher education degree must keep in mind that they will end up seriously contemplating suicide.
Best luck.
